Generate your own electricity. Hydropower plants or photovoltaic systems form the starting point of your independent energy supply. They deliver clean electricity directly to your own business operations and lay the foundation for greater independence from energy providers and rising electricity prices.

The Addition: Battery Storage

Use energy when it is needed. A battery storage system makes self-generated energy flexibly available. Surpluses are stored and utilized whenever needed – for self-consumption optimization, peak-shaving, or supplying operational consumers.

What does energy management actually achieve?

Energy management ensures that energy within the company is targeted, controlled, and used economically.

All relevant components within the operation are intelligently networked and centrally controlled—with the goal of increasing self-consumption, reducing peak loads, and optimizing energy costs over the long term. Specifically, this means:

  • Transparency over all energy flows A clear overview of where electricity and heat are generated, stored, and consumed within the operation—from the energy source down to the individual system.
  • Optimization of self-consumption and load profiles Intelligent control of consumers such as charging infrastructure, heat pumps, heating systems, machinery, or other operational equipment—automatically and based on demand.
  • Proactive control of energy and loads Forecast-based regulation based on consumption data, weather forecasts, and electricity price trends; prospectively also AI-supported, rather than purely reacting to consumption.
  • Future-proof, open system architecture Thanks to the open interfaces of the hardware used, components from a wide variety of manufacturers can be integrated. This includes, for example, heat pumps, air conditioning systems, electricity and heat meters, as well as wallboxes or other peripheral devices and assemblies. As a result, the energy management system remains manufacturer-independent, flexibly expandable, and can be adapted to new technical requirements in the business at any time.

Up to 45% funding available for energy management. 

Companies can receive support for implementing an energy management system through the BAFA funding program "Modul 3: MSR, Sensorik und Energiemanagement-Software" (Module 3: Measurement, Control, Sensor Technology, and Energy Management Software). Eligible for funding are, among others, energy management systems such as Loxone or Siemens, as well as meter infrastructure, sensor technology, control technology, software, and cloud services.

LOXONE ENERGY MANAGEMENT

Intelligently control energy and building technology.

Using energy when it is available or economically viable is the key to efficient business operations. With Loxone energy management, your building or enterprise becomes an intelligently controlled energy system: energy from hydropower or photovoltaics, battery storage, charging infrastructure, and other loads automatically work together, utilizing energy exactly when it is available or can be deployed cost-effectively.

Our solution is based on the Loxone Miniserver, which serves as the central controller for energy and building automation. In addition to classic energy management, lighting, shading, climate and heating technology, access control systems, and other building functions can be integrated and automated. The system is suitable for both new constructions and retrofitting existing buildings, creating transparency across all energy flows within the company.

How does energy management help cut energy costs in businesses?

An energy management system continuously analyzes energy flows within the company and controls generation, storage, and consumption in a targeted manner based on economic criteria. Energy generated on-site from hydropower or photovoltaics is used directly within the facility or temporarily stored whenever possible, rather than being fed into the grid at low rates of return.

At the same time, energy-intensive consumers such as machinery, charging infrastructure, heat generators, or cooling systems can be automatically controlled so that they run primarily when sufficient in-house energy is available or when electricity prices are particularly low. Energy storage systems can absorb excess energy and make it available again at a later time.

Another important factor is the reduction of peak loads. Through intelligent load management, large consumers are coordinated over time to avoid high power peaks. This lowers grid fees and further reduces electricity costs. In addition, energy monitoring provides complete transparency into all energy flows within the company. This allows for the identification of savings potential and the continuous optimization of energy processes.

Which plants and systems can be integrated into an energy management system?

An energy management system connects all relevant energy generators, storage units, and consumers within a company. This includes, for example, hydroelectric power plants, photovoltaic systems, energy storage devices, charging infrastructure, heat pumps, or heating systems. In addition, machinery, production facilities, cooling technology, or other major consumers can also be integrated.

The goal is to make energy flows transparent and to operate consumers specifically when self-generated energy is available or when electricity prices are particularly favorable. Thanks to open interfaces, components from different manufacturers can also be integrated.

Can an energy management system also be retrofitted in existing buildings?

Yes. Modern energy management systems can usually be integrated into existing buildings and facilities without any problems. Existing energy generators and consumers can be incorporated just as easily as existing building or machinery control systems.

Thanks to open interfaces and flexible control systems, even older systems can be retrofitted into a smart energy network. This allows energy flows to be controlled more transparently and existing energy sources to be used more economically—without the need to rebuild entire plants or facilities.

Why is energy management particularly important in the commercial sector?

Businesses have significantly more complex energy flows than private households. Production facilities, charging infrastructure, heating and cooling systems, and building services require large amounts of energy at different times. Without an overarching control system, this often results in unnecessary peak loads, insufficient self-consumption, and avoidable energy costs.

What funding opportunities are available for energy management in companies?

For companies, there are attractive funding opportunities available through the Federal Funding for Energy and Resource Efficiency in the Economy (EEW). Particularly relevant for energy management systems is BAFA Module 3: MSR (Measurement, Control, and Regulation Technology), Sensor Technology, and Energy Management Software.

Eligible for funding are, in particular, the acquisition, installation, and commissioning of energy management systems, such as solutions based on Loxone or Siemens. 

These include, among others:

  • The complete metering infrastructure for recording energy flows
  • Components and assemblies for controlling manageable/controllable loads
  • Sensor technology as well as measurement, control, and regulation technology (MSR) that contribute to the implementation of an energy management system
  • Software licenses and energy management software
  • Data loggers and database solutions for evaluating energy data
  • Necessary network infrastructure
  • Training and instruction sessions for the software used
  • As well as the full costs for cloud services, such as Loxone Exosphere

The amount of funding depends on the size of the company:

  • Small companies: up to 45% funding
  • Medium-sized companies: up to 35% funding
  • Large companies: up to 25% funding
